The white ceramic soup tureen had a hairline crack down the side that I had never noticed before. My son Robert set the heavy stack of dessert plates next to it, making the porcelain chime against the mahogany table.

โ€œI made the chicken salad the way you like it,โ€ I said, carrying the remains of the bread basket to the sideboard.

โ€œIt was excellent, Mother,โ€ Robert said. He adjusted his silver watch strap, the metal catching the light from the bay window. โ€œBut we really must talk about the property tax assessment. Sarah and I were looking at the county records last night.โ€

Sarahโ€™s name always came with a slight lift in his voice. They had been married for six months, and she had already suggested three different redecorating plans for my colonial home.

โ€œThe taxes are paid through the end of the year,โ€ I said.

โ€œBut the house is too large for one person,โ€ he said, his voice dropping into that smooth, persuasive register. โ€œThe maintenance alone must be a heavy burden on your fixed income.โ€

โ€œYour father built this house, Robert. It is not a burden.โ€

He smiled, a quick, practiced movement of his lips. โ€œOf course, but we want to ensure you are secure in your remaining years. A smaller place closer to us in the city might make sense.โ€

โ€œSarah has her heart set on Cape Cod for the summer,โ€ he added, wiping a spot of water from the table with a paper napkin. โ€œWe would need a substantial deposit to lock in a place where we could all spend the holidays.โ€

โ€œA summer rental is a luxury, Robert.โ€

โ€œIt is an investment in our family, Mother,โ€ he said.

โ€œI am perfectly secure here,โ€ I said, speaking slowly to keep my voice even.

I rubbed my gold wedding ring, sliding the band back and forth over my knuckle.

โ€œWe need to look at your entire monthly budget,โ€ he said, picking up the empty salad bowl. โ€œWith the cost of living rising in Boston, a retired pharmacy owner should not be managing these details alone.โ€

โ€œI managed the pharmacy accounts for thirty years, Robert.โ€
